JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- The Rock County Sheriff's Department is investigating damages found in a jail cell on Thursday morning.
According to the Sheriff's Department, corrections staff members were conducting a routine security check when they found damage to a heavy metal security screen in a cell in C-Unit at the Rock County Jail. The Unit where the damage was found houses the disciplinary segregation unit of the jail.
The inmate in the damaged cell was moved to another location in the jail as soon as the damages were discovered. Staff then inspected the cell and found that a metal security shelf had also been pried off of the wall in the cell. The shelf was replaced when the screen damages were discovered. Investigators believe the shelf was used to damage the security screen.
Once the damaged items were found, the entire jail was placed on lock down and a security inspection and shakedown for contraband items was conducted. The Rock County Sheriff's Department says security at the jail was never compromised or breached. Investigators also say that the damages were not the result of an escape attempt.
The Rock County Sheriff's Detective Bureau is investigating the incident to figure out who is responsible for the damages and why they caused the damage. Additionally, an administrative review is underway concerning security procedures and to determine if policies or procedures were followed by security staff in the time leading up to the incident.
