GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- When the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team makes its NCAA first-round appearance on Sunday, one special fan will be cheering from his couch.
Zach Heugel, 25, has Down syndrome, and when his parents noticed a lack of motivation and social interaction in their son last summer, they turned to UW-Green Bay for help.
The university paired Heugel with women's basketball star Celeste Hoewisch to spend time together playing basketball and exercising twice a week.
"It just clicked and it worked. Who knows why it really worked as well as it did, but it certainly did," said Nancy Heugel, Zach's mother.
"I feel like I've gained so much from it. I feel like I have another experience that makes me have a new perspective on life," said Hoewisch.
Hoewisch worked with Heugel as part of an internship with the university, and while that program ended months ago, the two remain friends.
