WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates has approved a series of changes making it harder to discharge a gay person for violating the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
The changes would now put higher-ranking officers in charge of discharge procedures and put tighter rules on evidence.
These new guidelines take effect immediately and will hold in place until Congress decides whether to go along with the Presidents call for a repeal of the law.
