MINNEAPOLIS (WKOW) -- Thieves stole personal data from more than 3.3 million people from a company that guarantees federal student loans in Minnesota.
Educational Credit Management Corp. said Friday the data included names, addresses, Social Security numbers and dates of birth of borrowers -- but no financial or bank account information.
The St. Paul-based nonprofit says the data was on "portable media" stolen last weekend. Details aren't being released because of law enforcement's ongoing investigation.
ECMC says credit protection agency Experian will provide affected borrowers with free credit monitoring and protection services.
