MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin has joined 16 other states in investigating seafood packers who may have been charging for ice.
The packers allegedly counted the weight of the ice surrounding the fish on the package's label, driving up the per-pound cost artificially.
Investigators removed more than 21,000 packages of seafood from shelves across the country in January and February. Wisconsin investigators removed 546 packages from 53 locations.
State Weights and Measures Chief Judy Cardin says consumer officials plan to take enforcement actions that could include civil forfeitures or criminal charges against 48 packers.
