UPDATE: Drywall collapses in apartment; everyone got out safely

TOWN OF MADISON (WKOW) -- The town of Madison fire chief says a structure collapse Monday night probably could have been prevented.

Around 9:30 p.m., firefighters responded to an apartment building on the 2500 block of Pheasant Ridge Trail.

They say a few sheets of drywall fell from the ceiling into the first story apartment, where a baby was in a crib.  Everyone in the apartment got out unharmed.

Chief David Bloom says the building showed signs of danger earlier in the day.

"There was a report... what we're hearing anyway is a resident on the second floor reported carpet water earlier [Monday] and we're trying to find out whether maintenance addressed it or not," said Bloom.

Apartment tenants were displaced from their homes into Tuesday morning.

There is no word yet on what caused the drywall to crumble.
