MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A tendency for child care centers to send sick kids home even when they are healthy enough to stay is putting a burden on parents and hospitals, according to new research.
A survey of more than 300 Milwaukee-area child care directors published Monday in the journal Pediatrics finds less experienced directors are more likely to send children home, even when health guidelines say the kids are not sick enough for such measures.
Researchers gave the directors five scenarios, in which guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Public Health Association find kids wouldn't need to be sent home immediately.
The study's authors say workers need to be better educated about health guidelines that suggest when a sick child should be sent home.
