Americans changing address; not going far

Posted:

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- It's out of the old and into the new for many Americans.

Census figures released Monday show that 12.5 percent of the U.S. population, or 37.1 million people, moved to a new home last year. That's up from a 60-year low of 11.9 percent, or 35.2 million, in 2008.

The increase was the first percentage gain in U.S. mobility since the height of the housing bubble in 2005. Still, most moves in the last year were within the same county and involved renters and lower-income people going from job to job.

The share of longer-distance moves in 2009 was unchanged. Analysts say that is evidence most workers were still taking few chances and staying put given the weak housing and job markets.
