Dept. of Health Services tracking West Nile Virus in Wis.
MADISON (WKOW) -- A statewide, toll-free hot line to better track the West Nile Virus in Wisconsin is being reactivated.
The state Department of Health Services is urging anyone who sees a dead bird to call the hot line to have the bird tested for West Nile Virus. The number is 1-800-433-1610. Hot line staff are available to answer questions about how to safely handle and dispose of the dead birds.
State Health Officer Dr. Seth Foldy says it's important to track the dead birds because they act as an early warning system for the virus.
The number of human cases of West Nile Virus has been decreasing since 2006 when there were 21. Last year there was just one reported case.
