Woman flown to hospital after SUV lands on railroad tracks
NEAR GENOA (WKOW) – A woman was flown to the hospital after her SUV left the road, went down an embankment and ended up on railroad tracks.
It happened around 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning near Genoa, about 20 miles south of La Crosse.
Witnesses say the woman started driving erratically and crossed over the center line. Crews said they had to act quickly because of the danger of the SUV being hit by a train.
"That was our first concern was to get the train traffic stopped," said Genoa Assistant Fire Chief Todd Oppriecht. "There's sixty trains that go up and down here every day and we've had several accidents on the tracks. We're kind of prepared to deal with it and the sheriff's department knows that. They get a hold of the railroad before they even contact us."
The woman was taken to a hospital in La Crosse. There's no word on what caused the crash.
