La Crosse man oldest person to climb both sides of Mt. Everest

LA CROSSE (WKOW) --  A La Crosse cardiologist is now the oldest person to climb both sides of Mount Everest.

Dr. Julio Bird, turned 60 during his trip. He says he met the youngest climber to reach the summit on his way up, 13-year-old Jordan Romero.

Obviously an eventful climb: Bird tells the La Crosse Tribune he just missed an avalanche that killed a Hungarian climber.

Bird spent a couple weeks getting used to the altitude, and hit the summit on May 17.

It was his third climb on the world's tallest mountain.
