KEWASKUM (WKOW) -- The father of a 12-year-old boy who drowned on Monday in Mauthe Lake in the Kettle Moraine said his son learned to swim at the YMCA and was a good swimmer.
Komonie Slade was swimming with four or five others when he disappeared, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department said.
According to our ABC affiliate in Milwaukee, some 80 Roosevelt Middle School seventh-graders spent their last day of school with eight teachers at the Mauthe Lake campground swimming area.
Ronald Slade said his son was really looking forward to the trip.
Around 12:30 p.m. investigators said Slade went missing. Authorities said the seventh grader was found almost 45 minutes later, 25 yards from shore and in 10 feet of water.
Slade died after Flight for Life took him to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah.
The Sheriff's Department is still investigating.
