Wayward cows escape after cattle truck overturns

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WKOW) -- Five cows remain on the lam in west Michigan one day after the cattle hauler that was delivering them to a Wisconsin slaughterhouse overturned.

Police said 14 of 26 cows remained inside the trailer after it overturned about 4 a.m. Wednesday on southbound U.S. 131 in Kent County. The driver, a 42-year-old man from Harrison, suffered minor injuries.

Police said the wayward cows hoofed it over highway guardrails, forced traffic detours and caused at least one accident.

Officers have rounded up all but five cows.

The animals were headed from a farm in Farwell, near Mount Pleasant, to a slaughterhouse in Milwaukee.

Michigan State Police Trooper Joe Young tells The Grand Rapids Press the cows will be euthanized when they are captured.  Police are asking anyone who spots a wayward cow to call 911.
