Red Cross Real Heroes: Janie Lynaugh

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- WKOW has partnered with the American Red Cross to honor people who have made a difference in our communities. They are this year's 'Red Cross Real Heroes.' We honor a woman who seemingly does it all; from helping the homeless to feeding the hungry. Janie Lynaugh is 'Someone You Should Know.'

When it comes to helping people, it seems like Janie Lynaugh is everywhere.

"I enjoy doing it," said Janie Lynaugh. "I don't know. When there's a need that needs fulfilling, I hardly ever say no."

Her friend and fellow Porchlight volunteer, Ruth Loomis, found that out first hand.

"When I was out for 2 months, she took over for me, ran the whole thing, took care of all the donations, sorted, made it available to our clients, did a wonderful job without any tutoring," said Ruth Loomis.

Along with countless hours bringing in donations and organizing here at Porchlight, Janie helps prepare and serve food for the homeless. Last year, she and her sister organized a fund-raising tent sale at the Pink Poodle. Janie found out - what goes around comes around.

"When we had this Pink Poodle sale last July, honestly, we had 50 people, friends of mine, who weren't signed up to work, showed up to help because I was in the hospital because I got stung by a hornet and I went into shock in about 15 minutes, I almost died," said Janie. "And, they just came out of the woodwork, it was amazing! I cried. I couldn't believe it!"

Amazing is the perfect word for all of the time Janie is able to find for giving. As a two time president of Unity Church of Madison she helped get a one-a-week blood donation club going.

"Just takes a couple hours every 2 months, and you could save someone's life," said Janie.

Janie says she likes to stay busy. She squeezes all of her volunteer duties in between her full-time job as a certified appraiser and a grandma.

"My favorite volunteer program is my grandchildren," said Janie.

Like many who give so much, this Community Real Hero isn't quite comfortable with the recognition. But, she hopes she's set an example her grandchildren and others will follow for the rest of their lives too.

"I mean everyone can do something," said Janie. "For whatever makes their heart sing, you know? If it's homeless people, if it's working with the Red Cross in an evacuation situation or donating clothing or writing a check. Everyone can do something."
