KEWAUNEE (WKOW) -- Kewaunee will drop the Kewaunee Indians team name and logo.
The district was among the first in the state to be tested by a new state law regarding race-based school names and logos, and has asked the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to cancel a hearing about the matter.
"Our district and community have always viewed the use of the name 'Kewaunee Indians' as complimentary and as a tribute to our area's heritage," Kewaunee School Board president Brian Vogeltanz said in a written statement released Tuesday.
"However, over the past few years, as we all become more aware of, and sensitive to, those who did not share the view, we removed the Indians name, logos and caricatures from many of our team uniforms and facilities.
The use of the name is discontinued and changes will be made quickly, he said. The school board and district plan to involve the community in the development of a new name and logo, Vogeltanz's statement said.
