Minnesota bank robbery suspect arrested in Madison

MADISON (WKOW) -- The FBI has arrested a St. Paul man in Madison, on suspicion of robbing a Twin Cities bank. According to multiple reports, state troopers arrested the suspect, Robert Lee Russell, 56, after his crashed his getaway minivan in Wisconsin.

Russell was reportedly at the University of Wisconsin hospital in Madison, getting treatment for injuries suffered in the accident. He faces one count of bank robbery.

According to the FBI, Russell released a hostage from the bank robbery and fired on an off-duty police officer, before two witnesses saw him drive away in a purple or maroon Dodge Caravan. The witnesses say they saw Russell holding a silver handgun.

Law enforcement caught up with Russell just after midnight Thursday morning, when he was involved in a wreck. According to the FBI, the arresting officers noted Russell appeared to be intoxicated.
