NEW YORK (WKOW) -- 100 mph winds tore through New York City Thursday leaving one person dead and damaging everything in its path.

Trees were knocked to the ground, power lines torn down, and roofs ripped off. Although New York rarely has tornados, meteorologists will confirm Friday whether or not a twister touched down Thursday night. New York has had eight confirmed tornados since 1960, says the National Weather Service. The same storm passed through Ohio earlier Thursday and caused serious damage, ruining 18 homes in one county alone.
