ROME (AP) -- U.S. and Croatian search and rescue teams have now joined the search for two American balloonists who disappeared in the Adriatic off the Italian coast.
Italy's Coast Guard had already been searching for the Americans, who disappeared in rough weather.
Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer-Davis had been taking part in a balloon race when contact with them was lost. The race involves trying to fly as far as you can on a limited amount of natural gas.
Their balloon had been equipped with a satellite phone, VHF radios and other communications gear. Their flight director says there's no way they could still be in the air.
Italy's Coast Guard says the United States offered two Navy aircraft to join in the search and one was put to work this afternoon.
Croatian aircraft crews, meanwhile, have been searching the area around an uninhabited Croatian island.
