BOSTON (AP) -- Although Boston has been whipped by heavy rain for hours today, forecasters say New England is likely to be spared the extreme rainfall that flooded roads and homes elsewhere along the East Coast.
While Boston was drenched, other parts of the Northeast dried out this afternoon following heavy overnight rain.
More than 50,000 power outages were reported this morning in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts, but many customers had their power back by this afternoon.
The storm is blamed for five deaths in North Carolina and one early today in Pennsylvania.
