MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- Republican Senate candidate Ron Johnson says he is against federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
He says he supports research on stem cells derived from adult cells but embryonic cells involve destroying life.
He also says ending the funds will help balance the budget.
As one of the leading centers for stem cell research, Wisconsin will be especially hard-hit by the lack of federal funding.
Johnson is challenging incumbent Sen. Russ Feingold in the November election. Feingold has said he supports research on embryonic cells for their potential in treating a number of serious diseases.
