U.S. Senate candidates in Wisconsin lack support from hometown papers

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- The U.S. Senate candidates in Wisconsin can't rely on support from their hometown newspapers this year.

Democratic incumbent Sen. Russ Feingold is from Janesville, but The Janesville Gazette has chosen to endorse his Republican opponent, Ron Johnson of Oshkosh.

The Oshkosh Northwestern decided to pass over Johnson and endorse Feingold instead.

Both of the papers faulted their local candidates for not being responsive enough to the communities' needs.

The Gazette says Feingold didn't do enough to prevent General Motors Corp. from closing its Janesville plant last year.

The Oshkosh paper says Johnson hasn't made a compelling enough case to replace an effective Feingold.
