VERONA (WKOW) -- The Salvation Army of Dane County kicked off its Red Kettle Campaign Wednesday at Miller and Sons Grocery Store in Verona.
Miller and Sons was chosen to host the kickoff because it was the number one site last year, bringing in $34,571.
"Many thanks go out to the generosity of our customers who put money in our kettle making our store the number one store again this year," said Miller and Sons co-owner Barb Miller.
The Dane County Salvation Army has already had 2,000 families ask for help. They expect the need to rise to 3,000 by next week.
This year's kettle goal is $620,000. The Salvation Army says if just 2 percent of the Dane County population would ring bells for one two-hour shift, all 12,000 shifts would be covered and $1,000,000 could be raised.
Only 47 percent of the shifts were covered last year.
"It's the difference between people getting help at Christmas and not getting help," says Major Paul Moore, Dane County Coordinator for the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army provides shelter housing and various other programs to Dane County families in need. To sign up for a bell ringing shift, call 250-2235 or register online.
