MADISON (WKOW) -- The state's nine-day gun deer season opens Saturday and state wildlife officials are trying something new this year.
The Department of Natural Resources will be accepting text messages to report hunting and safety violations.
Wisconsin joins more than 27 other states who are part of a national program that routes text messages to authorities.
Anyone with a cell phone can text information to tip411. The message must start with the letters TIPWDNR to make sure it's routed to Wisconsin DNR hotline operators.
The DNR will monitor the hotline seven days a week from 7 a.m. through 10 p.m. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
