Report hunting violations with text messages

MADISON (WKOW) -- State wildlife officials announce they'll accept reports of hunting and safety violations through text messages for the first time this year.

The Department of Natural Resources joined a national program in April that directs text messages to authorities. More than 27 states are involved in the project.

Cell phone owners can text information to tip411. The message should start with the letters TIPWDNR in order to be correctly routed to Wisconsin DNR hotline operators rather than operators from other states.

The DNR will monitor the hotline seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tipsters reports can remain anonymous.

Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer season opens Saturday.
