DANE COUNTY (WKOW) -- It was opening day for the nine-day gun-deer hunt.

27 News headed out with the family that owns Tom's Guns in Marshall. On the first day of hunting, it's a family affair.

15-year-old Collin Bergholz got a doe his first year hunting.

This year, he's hoping for the big one.

Bergholz says, "The first day is the most exciting, you're all pumped up. You've had a year to wait. Sometimes you get discouraged because you don't see anything, but it's still fun."

As of about noon Saturday, the DNR says they have sold 402,008 resident gun deer licenses for this year's hunt. They sold 27,466 nonresident gun deer licenses. Reps say hunters can also buy licenses during the season, so the number will likely go up a bit.
