Former Playboy model and murder convict dies

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WKOW) -- A former Milwaukee police officer and Playboy Club model who was recognized nationally after she was convicted of murder and then escaped from prison has died in Oregon. Laurie Bembenek died Saturday at the age of 52.

Bembenek was sentenced to life in prison after she was convicted in 1982 of fatally shooting her police detective husband's ex-wife. In 1990, she escaped from prison and fled to Canada.

"Run Bambi Run" T-shirts and bumper stickers were sold to those who supported her flight.

Although Bembenek was captured, she was later released after she pled no contest to second-degree murder. A TV movie starring Tatum O'Neal was created based on her story.

Her attorney, Mary Woehrer, says Bembenek died at a hospice care center in Portland, Ore. According to Were, liver failure was the cause of her death.
