PORTAGE COUNTY (WKOW) -- Investigators are working to determine what killed 200 cows on a Portage County farm last week. The Portage County Sheriff's Office says it was notified on Friday about numerous dead cows lying in a field on the farm, near Amherst in the town of Stockton.
The farm's owner says he is working with a veterinarian to determine the exact cause of the animals' illness, but suspects either a respiratory disease found in cattle, or Bovine Virus Diarrhea.
According to reports, samples of the dead animals are being sent to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Madison for further testing.
Authorities spent much of the weekend removing the animals by the semi-load.
