UPDATE: Madison snow emergency extended to Wednesday

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Street Superintendent Al Schumacher says the snow emergency will continue until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Residents are asked to keep their vehicles off the street Tuesday if possible. If you must park on the street Tuesday evening, you should park on the odd house-numbered side of the street.

Alternate side parking violations are punishable by a $60 fine.

During a snow emergency, you can also park in cashiered sections of city-owned downtown parking ramps for free between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Officials say drivers are liable for parking charges if they enter the ramp before 9 or leave after 7.

Those who do park in the ramps overnight should not park on the top level so the area can be plowed. Meters in lots and ramps are enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Parking is also available at the Brittingham Park Shelter parking lot off West Washington Ave.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Thirty-two snow removal units will be on the roads until 10 or 11 p.m., according to Street Superintendent Al Schumacher as of 2:45 p.m.

At that point, 175 pieces of equipment will be sent out to clear the entire city by morning.

Madison hires both private contractors and uses city equipment to get snow cleared overnight.

Streets Superintendent Al Schumacher said Monday afternoon, "We've lost the battle but will win the war."

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Streets Department declares a snow emergency.

Crews are continuing to plow and salt the main arterials, the main connector streets, streets around the hospitals and schools and Madison Metro Bus Routes, which are the salt routes throughout the rest of the day and all evening. That's according to Madison Streets Superintendent Alan Schumacher. The salt routes have been salted and plowed since the storm started early this morning. Crews have been on the 30 salt routes since 6:00 a.m. this morning. Due to the moderate snowfall during the morning, the streets are snow covered and slippery but crews are still working and will continue to work to clear them.

The Snow Emergency is for Monday night and Tuesday night. All people who park on the street throughout the entire City of Madison must abide by the alternate side parking regulations. This includes the downtown isthmus area where the Snow Emergency will be in effect. The parking restrictions are in effect from 1:00 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. on both nights.

Crews will be plowing all residential streets during the overnight hours tonight. The plowing of the residential streets will begin at 10:00 this evening and we expect to have all 769 miles of streets plowed by 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
