DETROIT (WKOW) -- A federal judge has set an October 4, trial date for a Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a crowded Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas 2009 with a bomb hidden in his underwear.
The trial date for 24-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was set during a pre-trial hearing Tuesday. Abdulmutallab has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, which includes attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Federal authorities say Abdulmutallab tried to detonate the hidden bomb on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam as it was approaching Detroit. About 300 people were on board.
Authorities say he caused a small fire but the device didn't explode. Passengers are credited with jumping on top of him and helping to extinguish the flames.
