Cruise ships canceling Mazatlan stop, citing crime

MEXICO CITY (WKOW) -- Some cruise ship companies are canceling stops in the Mexican Pacific port of Mazatlan and others are considering it due to crime.

Disney Wonder has dropped stops to Mazatlan from its seven-night Mexican Riviera tour and replaced them with an additional stop in Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California peninsula.

Company officials say that "safety is very important to us and we believe this change is necessary."

In a statement released by Holland America Line, a January 26 Mazatlan port stop was replaced with one in the Pacific port of Manzanillo because of "recent incidents of violence."

A spokesperson with Carnival Cruise says the company is deciding whether its ship the Spirit will make a February 2 stop in Mazatlan.
