PORT WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- A former Saukville police officer has been acquitted of charges that she set fire to a vacant home in 2008.
A jury in Ozaukee County found 28-year-old Melissa L. Kronebusch not guilty Friday. She was charged with arson and second-degree reckless endangering safety.
Prosecutors say surveillance video showed Kronebusch at the home about 20 minutes before the fire started. The criminal complaint says she left and then returned a few minutes later and reported the fire.
Prosecutors wanted to argue that she set the fire to help her firefighter boyfriend work through some anxieties. The defense theorized that firefighters burned down the vacant house for practice.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says a judge ruled against introducing either theory to jurors because of a lack of evidence.
