MADISON (WKOW) -- They're going red for themselves and their families.
The Go Red for Women Girlfriends Challenge is a 12-week challenge through the American Heart Association aimed at creating a heart-healthy lifestyle.
"I have a really strong history of cardiac diseases in my family," said Melissa Mael, who is participating in the challenge. "My dad died of a heart attack at 61, my mom had her first heart attack at 58 and then bypass... I want to be a good role model for my kids."
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S.
