Monster snowstorm affecting a third of nation

COLUMBIA, Mo. (WKOW) -- A monster storm is affecting areas from the Rockies to New England, covering about a third of the nation in white. Heavy snow and ice is expected, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-chilling cold.

Some areas already have storm and blizzard warnings posted. Power companies and road crews are getting ready for the worst.

Cities like St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee will potentially be hit the hardest. Up to 2 feet of snowfalls and drift piled 5 to 10 feet are expected by midweek.

In Chicago, 20 inches of snow is forecasted. If that really happens, it would be the windy city's third-biggest snowstorm in history.

Freezing rain has covered roads across the Plains. Two school buses slid off the icy roads in Kansas City, Mo. Hundreds of crashes are reported in Minnesota statewide.

The National Weather Service advises Packer fans who are going to drive to Dallas for the Super Bowl to delay their plans until Wednesday afternoon.
