White House backs off request for Egyptian president to step down

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKOW)-- The White House is backing off its request that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarek step down immediately.

It says Egypt needs time to prepare for fair and free elections.

If Mubarek stepped down today, the country would need to have an election within 60 days, which isn't enough time to make changes.

Mubarek has said that he will not resign, but he won't seek re-election in September.
