WWII remains of Green Bay airman found

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- A Green Bay airman who disappeared during World War II is among eleven U.S. servicemen whose remains have been found and identified. The Defense Department identified the Wisconsin airman as 2nd Lt. Robert R. Streckenbach, Jr.

Streckenbach was 21 when he and 10 others took off from an airfield in New Guinea in 1943 for a mission near the country's northern coast. The B-24D Liberator failed to return, and searches turned up no evidence of the crew or aircraft.

In 1984, the government of Papua New Guinea notified the U.S. of a World War II crash site. Investigators responded but couldn't recover very much because of landslide threats. Local villagers eventually helped recover the remains which are being returned to their families for burial with full military honors.
