NEW ZEALAND (WKOW)-- After suffering two earthquake in recent months, parts of Christchurch New Zealand are being abandoned. Hundreds of homes and buildings were destroyed and clean up efforts are slow at best.
New Zealand's prime minister says some parts of Christchurch will have to abandoned altogether because of earthquake damage. Prime Minister John Key also says 10,000 houses will have to be demolished.
The magnitude 6.3 temblor that hit on Feb. 22 shattered homes, heritage buildings and office blocks. Officials say the confirmed death toll is 166, and that it is expected to rise to more than 200.
Prime Minister John Key told reporters Monday that "there are some parts of Christchurch that can't be rebuilt on" because of liquefaction and other land damage.
