CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WKOW) -- A survivor and the families of two victims of last year's West Virginia mine explosion have filed lawsuits against Massey Energy as the disaster's one-year anniversary draws near.
Families of Joe Marcum and Adam Morgan, and Stanley Stewart, who escaped from the April 5 massive explosion that killed 29 miners, filed three separate lawsuits Monday in Boone Circuit Court .
The lawsuits name Massey and subsidiaries Massey Coal Services and Performance Coal Co.
At least two other families of victims have filed lawsuits. Massey said last week it had reached settlements with seven families.
The lawsuits state that Massey operated the Upper Big Branch mine in a "willful, wanton and recklessly unsafe manner," according to the Charleston Gazette.
