Secretary of State meets with Japanese Foreign Minister about aid
MADISON (WKOW) -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto met on the sidelines of the G8 summit in Paris Tuesday to discuss what additional aid the U.S. could provide.
Chilton assured Matsumoto of continued U.S. assistance in recovering from the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck on Friday. The Japanese government has asked the U.S. for help in dealing with the nuclear crisis. Eight more experts from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission are now on their way to Japan.
Overnight, the USS George Washington located in Yokosuka, detected low levels of radioactivity coming from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. Precautionary measures are not being taken at the U.S. naval bases in Yokosuka and Atsugi which are more than 100 miles away from the nuclear plant.
