FUKUSHIMA, Japan (WKOW) -- Workers at the troubled nuclear power plant in Japan were evacuated Monday morning after reports of smoking coming from a reactor.
The evacuation halted work to restore electricity to reactor cooling systems.
Plant officials have been battling to cool reactors and spent-fuel pools to bring the radiation-leaking plant under control. It was damaged in the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeast Japan.
Meanwhile, officials now estimate the earthquake and tsunami have killed more than 18,400 people.
