FOND DU LAC (WKOW) -- A Fond du Lac police officer shot by a gunman Sunday remains in critical condition Monday.
33-year-old Ryan Williams is in the intensive care unit at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah where he underwent surgery. Trauma medical doctor, Dr. Raymond Georgen, says Williams was shot once in the left shoulder and once in the right chest, just below the collarbone.
Williams and Officer Craig Birkholz were responding to a welfare check Sunday morning when an armed suspect opened fire. The Fond du Lac police chief says both Williams and Birkholz were wearing bullet-proof vests. Birkholz was hit in the upper chest in an area not covered by the vest. He died at the scene.
Police say the gunman, James Cruckson, turned the gun on himself Sunday morning during a standoff with police.
