TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (WKOW) -- The federal government made it illegal today to bring live bighead carp into the U.S. or to transport the fish across state lines.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it's publishing a rule tomorrow adding the bighead to a list of species banned under the Lacey Act. The act seeks to prevent the spread of animals deemed harmful to humans or the populations of other animals.
The list was approved by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama in December.
Bighead carp are threatening the Great Lakes region and its wildlife. The carp have been migrating north from their southern habitat by traveling up the Mississippi River.
Silver carp were already on the banned list.
Recently, Canadian authorities caught several importers trying to smuggle live carp into Ontario.
