MADISON (WKOW) -- A state Senate committee is considering whether or not to change the city of Milwaukee's residency requirement for police officers and firefighters.
Under the bill, Milwaukee police officers and firefighters would be allowed to live anywhere in a five-county area, instead of being required to live within the city limits.
Milwaukee's fire chief says having emergency workers in the city creates a sense of community.
Chief Mark Rohlfing says when we have firefighters in the city it helps build trust and helps us serve the community better.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett also spoke against the bill.
Mayor Barrett says the state should not meddle in something that local officials believe is right for their constituents.
