Wis. 8-year-old boy won't be charged in fatal fire
WEST BEND (WKOW) -- The Washington County district attorney says the department will not press criminal charges against an 8-year-old West Bend boy who started a fatal house fire.
District Attorney Mark Bensen says because the boy is under 10, he's too young to be charged with a delinquent act. But Bensen says his department will probably file a petition that could end up placing the boy outside his home.
Police had requested charges after investigating a March 12 fire that killed 29-year-old April Ward.
According to a police report, the boy said he was upset with Ward because she wouldn't wake up to give him his medication. He then took a lighter from her purse and started burning her belongings.
Family members told police the boy has been caught starting fires in the past.
