BAKU, Azerbaijan (WKOW) -- At least 200 people have been detained in Azerbaijan for protesting in the capital city of Baku despite authorities banning protests, according to an opposition leader.
The police had sealed off town squares and central streets to discourage protestors. Still, activists held several gatherings across the city.
At one gathering, protestors shouted "We want freedom!" and waived anti-government flags, rallying for democratic reforms.
The protests are aimed at authoritarian President Ilham Aliyev, who has been in power since 2003.
