Madison (WKOW) -- Madison Police are investigating two separate stabbings that took place Saturday evening at the Mifflin Street Block Party in downtown Madison.
The stabbings happened just a few hours apart on Mifflin Street. A 22-year-old suspect with a Green Bay address was detained in connection with the first stabbing.
That happened around 5:00 Saturday evening. Police say a 21-year old UW- Madison student suffered life-threatening injuries after being stabbed multiple times in the 500 block of W. Mifflin Street.
Police detained three men fleeing the scene: the 22-year-old is now believed to be the one who inflicted the stab wounds. He is also thought to be responsible for kicking a second male victim in the jaw as that man attempted to stop the suspect following the stabbing. The second victim declined transport to a hospital. None of the three men detained has been arrested, and names are not being released at this time.
Then, around 7:30 PM, a second stabbing victim was located in the 400-block of W. Mifflin St. He suffered non-life threatening injuries. Police have not detained anyone in this case.
And the violence doesn't end there. Earlier in the day, a MPD sergeant and a MPD neighborhood officer were hurt while trying to control a combative suspect. The sergeant suffered rib injuries. The officer suffered a leg injury.
Also, a second MPD sergeant suffered facial injuries when she was punched while trying to stop a man carrying a bottle of alcohol. He is currently in the arrest processing center at the City County Building.
As of 9:00 p.m., 160 people had been arrested.
Most were cited and released for things like having glass on the street, underage drinking, and depositing human waste.
In a press release, Madison Police Chief Noble Wray expressed serious concern over the 2011 Mifflin Street Block Party following the two stabbing incidents, several injured police officers, many fights, and a significant number of highly intoxicated people, more than 20 of whom were taken to detox.
The rules were a bit different than recent parties. Party-goers were allowed to carry alcohol into the event and drink in a designated permit area. MPD officers reported the crowd size, and the number of very intoxicated people was far greater than recent Mifflin Street Block Parties.
WKOW (MADISON) -- Madison Police are investigating a second stabbing on the 400 block of Mifflin Street.
Man is being taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
They have no suspects or persons of interest in that case.
That incident happened around 7:30 Saturday evening on Mifflin.
Meanwhile, around 5:00 PM, police say another man was stabbed during the Mifflin Street Block Party.
The victim was taken to a local hospital. His condition is unknown, said Madison Police spokesperson Joel DeSpain.
Police have detained two to three persons of interest for questioning, DeSpain said.
