Call for Action: Eyeglasses deal gets expensive

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Hindsight is often 20/20. Mike Cahoon says he probably should have done some comparison shopping when he was looking to buy new eyeglasses. Instead, he got roped-in by this commercial: "Two pairs of no line bifocals from 99 dollars," says the ad.

But when he went to Stanton Optical to get the $99 deal, he says he could only choose from a small selection of glasses. He wanted something else: metal frames, name-brand lenses and an anti-glare coating. He wanted "Crizal".

"I know they are more expensive so I expected to pay a little extra," said Cahoon.

Mike's bill shot up from 99 bucks to $496. He wasn't too thrilled but agreed. Then, he says, two weeks later he got a call from Stanton Optical about his order of the anti-glare coating.

"They could only put it on a specific lens that they don't carry," said Cahoon.

And in order for Mike to get it, the store needed more money: $106, bringing his total bill to $602.

"I didn't know where to turn," said Cahoon.

Call for Action got involved. We asked Stanton Optical to stand by its original deal with Mike.

"That's what I agreed to. That is what I paid for," said Cahoon.

And it did. Stanton Optical refunded him $106. Still, looking back, Mike admits he may have been blinded by the sound of a good deal.
