PORTAGE (WKOW) -- As more boaters hit the water with warmer weather in the area, the Columbia County Sheriff's office issued an alert for the Wisconsin River.
In a news release Friday, Sheriff Dennis Richards warned boaters of a potentially hazardous area on the Wisconsin River just upriver from Lake Wisconsin.
"The floods on the Wisconsin River the past year have resulted in the river channel filling in. The channel marker buoys in that area cannot be placed due to the shallow water. The Sheriff's office has received numerous reports of boaters striking the newly formed sandbars in this area," states Richards.
Officials also remind boaters to use caution anywhere on the Wisconsin River due to the changing water and sandbar conditions.
