UPDATE (WKOW) -- Madison police arrested a 22-year-old woman after the death of her three-year-old son.
They say 22-year-old Maria Castillo-Dominguez brought her son Luis Valquez to the hospital last Thursday.
They say she told police she'd hit his head against a wall, and when he started showing signs of "physical distress" she brought him to the hospital.
He died Sunday at UW hospital of a severe head injury.
Officials say it happened at Castillo-Dominguez' apartment on Lake Pointe Drive in Madison, where neighbors say she, her boyfriend, and her two children had just moved in a couple months ago.
It's unclear whether or not the boyfriend was home at the time of the incident.
Neighbor Raul Quiroga says police canvassed the area a couple days ago, "They asked us if we heard fighting going on lately; I guess they've been fighting. They blocked off this whole thing [apartment hall] too."
Neighbors paint a picture of what may have been a violent household.
Ashley Sulfin saw it herself, saying, "He had chased her up the stairs with her newborn baby. They were screaming and crying."
Advocates, and the Madison police chief himself, say its incidents like this that reinforce the need to combat domestic violence and child abuse in the city.
Castillo-Dominguez faces charges of first degree reckless homicide. Police say they're not expecting to file any charges against Castillo-Dominguez' boyfriend, but they do say it is an ongoing investigation.
MADISON (WKOW) -- A 22-year-old Madison woman has been arrested by the Madison Police Department, facing a tentative charge of First Degree Reckless Homicide in the death of her 3-year-old son.
Madison Police spokesman Joel DeSpain says the child was taken to UW Hospital on Thursday, June 30, with a head injury.
The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office says Luis Vasquez died at the hospital on July 3.
DeSpain says Maria Castillo-Dominguez, of Madison, told detectives that she struck her child inside their Lake Point Dr. apartment and his head hit a wall. Later that day, he began to show signs of physical distress and was taken to the hospital.
The case detective says Castillo-Dominguez was arrested on 2 counts of Physical Abuse of a Child on July 1st. The original tentative charges were amended on July 5, when the First Degree Reckless Homicide tentative charge was made.
The Dane County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy Tuesday. The medical examiner says the preliminary results of that autopsy indicate the injuries to Vasquez are consistent with inflicted trauma, and they say additional testing is currently underway.
The case remains under investigation by the City of Madison Police and the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.
