MADISON (WKOW) -- Neighbors are reacting to the deaths of two young boys who police say were killed by their mother's boyfriend.
Police say 28-year-old David Hoem is the prime suspect in the case.
The mother of the two young boys shared an apartment with Hoem on Madison's south side.
"It just gives me chills," said neighbor Angela Morales.
"It's terrible something like this happened next door to me," said Tim Olson.
Another neighbor, Brad Brown, said, "This is just real sad and to be right next door, it's like wow."
Neighbors say Hoem and his girlfriend just recently moved to the Nob Hill Apartments on Madison's south side.
Brad Brown didn't know them, but he says he heard a heated argument coming from the couple next door on the 4th of July.
The next day, police say the mother of the two children reported the fight and told police a knife was involved.
"Police during the day - they were in and out, in and out," said Morales.
"I did see some cop cars out here up front. I had no idea it was neighbors this happened to. This was crazy," Olson said.
According to court records, David Hoem has a criminal history which includes domestic violence. In 2006 he was convicted of false imprisonment. A previous girlfriend claimed Hoem pointed a gun at her face and forced her into a basement.
According to court records, Hoem was sentenced to two years in prison and had to complete abuser treatment.
"It's kinda hurting me cause I was right next door," said Brown.
Madison police say they are holding David Hoem on a parole violation. He has not been charged in connection with the children's deaths.
