JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- A 40-year-old Janesville man is dead, and his neighbor is in custody.
Police say they were called to 31 S. Main Street in downtown Janesville around 10:30 Tuesday night for a welfare check. A neighbor had heard shouting and banging noises upstairs.
When officers arrived, they found 53-year-old William Davis at his door.
Deputy Chief Dan Davis said, "He opened the door.. and charged them immediately."
Officers tased Davis and took him into custody, only to get another call from a neighbor, saying they'd found 40-year-old Joseph Hanson, fatally stabbed to death in his bed.
Hanson lived next door to William Davis.
Deputy Chief Davis said, "Through our investigation, we were able to link Mr. Davis to the homicide in all probability."
Angela Collas owns the coffee shop downstairs. She said Hanson frequented her shop.
Collas said, "Joe would come in and drink coffee. He'd just sit; he liked to listen to his radio."
Officers say Davis suffered from mental health issues, and court records show he'd had contact with Hanson before.
In 2007, Davis was charged with disorderly conduct. According to the criminal complaint, Hanson told police Davis came into his apartment, yelling, "I'm going to get this guy."
Police haven't released a motive yet in this case.
Davis is currently undergoing a mental evaluation and has not yet been charged with this crime.
Hanson's parents tell 27 News he was one of 11 children. He attended Big Foot High School, where he succeeded in multiple sports including track and field and wrestling. He's remembered as well-liked, and mild-mannered.
